BUCHAREST – BRASOV – SIGHISOARA – SIBIU
Day 1 Bucharest - Sinaia - Bran - Brasov
Departure 9:00 am.
On the way to Brasov we stop in Sinaia, one of the finest mountain resorts in Romania, with spectacular surroundings and rich history. Visit at the famous Peles Palace, former summer residence of the Romanian royal family. It’s over-the-top opulent with 160 rooms, a lot of them with different themes, like the Turkish and Moorish salons, rooms designed in Baroque and Rococo. Amazing carved and inlaid wood floors, panels, and ceilings, statues, paintings, armour and weapons, luxurious furniture, leaded glass windows. From the outside, the castle looks like a really nice hunting lodge with statues and fountains on the grounds, and an elegant clock tower.
13:00 Lunch at Bucegi restaurant ( romanian cousine )
15:30 Visit Bran Castle, an amazing example of 14th century Gothic architecture that looks like it was carefully placed on top of a mountain. This fortress is the place where Dracula (Vlad the impaler) was incarcerated. Most people know Bran Castle as “Dracula’s Castle”, from Bram Stoker’s novel. This story is loosely based on Vlad Tepes who ruthlessly defended this part of Transylvania, and in the process, the legend of his rather gruesome killings inspired the story of Dracula.
18:00 Arrive in Brasov, accommodation at Ischia Pension *** (or similar)
Day 2 Brasov - Viscri - Sighisoara
12:00 am depart to Viscri.
It’s hard not to fall in love with Viscri – it’s like stepping into a fairy tale. The Saxon character of Viscri has been so well preserved that the entire village has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Through a common effort of residents and the Mihai Eminescu trust, through funding from Britain’s Prince Charles many of the buildings in the village have been refurbished using exclusively traditional construction materials.
15:30 pm arrive in Sighisoara. Accommodation in Casa Cristina **
Founded by Transylvanian Saxons during the 12th century, Sighisoara (Schassburg in German) still stands as one of the most beautiful and best-preserved medieval towns in Europe. Designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, this perfectly intact 16th century citadel with cobbled streets, burgher houses and ornate churches rivals the historic streets of Old Prague or Vienna for atmospheric magic.
Vlad Dracula was born here in 1431 and lived with his family here for 5 years. His house is just one of the many attractions here.
