Dracula's footsteps
Bran Castle & Poienari Fortress
1 day trip from 50 euro/person
For over 100 years historians, fans and sceptics have tried to discover and understand the truth behind the legend of the Wallachian King “Vlad Tepes Dracula”.
We’ll take you to places were Dracula has lived, took battles or just passed trough and you’ll hear the stories behind them.
First stop is at Bran Castle, a 14th century fortress mistaken by the regular tourist with Dracula's Castle. This is where the legend of Dracula (the vampire) started.
From Bran we depart to Poienari Fortress crossing trough the Rucar-Bran valley.
The view is spectacular as we pas by the Bucegi and Piatra Craiului mountains on our way to Wallachia.
After 1 ½ h we arrive at Curtea de Arges Monastery, the oldest church in Wallachia where the former Royal family of Romania is buried. All the Wallachian kings took a special interest in this monastery as there’s a legend behind the construction of this Church. Every thing that that it was built in the day was crumbling over night until the chief of the builders “Manole” had a dream. God appeared in the dream and told him that they need to build a woman within the walls of the church so it wouldn’t crumble anymore. Find out what they did and how they finished the construction of the church on this tour.
Poienari Fortress

The Fortress is placed on the highest cliff around Arges gorgeous at 850m, sorounded by spectacular landscape and to get here you’ll hick the 1480 steps.
The first documents mentioning poienari fortress are from the 14th century when here was only a surveillance tower.
In 1457 Dracula used the unfaithful landowners to rebuild it.
On Easter Day in he trapped them at the religious service in the church and forced them to walk to Poienari. Once there, he raised his sword toward the old fortress ruins and ordered them to repair and consolidate it in 1 week.
It's hard to believe this can be the truth, but the legend says that the people preferred hard work instead of being impaled. Lots of them lost their lives there as they had to climb the steep hill, but they finished the construction in 1 week, as ordered. All those alive were forgiven by Vlad Tepes because he decided they'd learned their lesson.
There are moore legends about this place and Dracula, but you’ll hear them all on this tour.
